What do you think of when we say: IT department? A dark den in the basement where a few IT people untangle the cables? Throw that image overboard. Because Brand New Day’s IT department is open, cozy and (conveniently) in the middle of the company. What’s great about that you’ll hear from Mike.
Always working on improvement
“I’ve been working as a system administrator at Brand New Day for 4 years now,” says Mike. “What makes Brand New Day different from some other companies is that the social aspect is really present here. As a system administrator, you’re often used to retreating into the server room. That’s not an issue here because many colleagues just walk into our office if they have a question. Just like in the rest of the company, our door is always open.”
“But it also works the other way around, I also enjoy to see how people use their workstations. After all, that’s when you really see how someone uses the systems and what they run into. That social part is quite present and is one of the reasons why I like coming to the office. Having a chat with colleagues and seeing how I can make their work better.”
If all goes well, you don’t see us
Well it’s certainly not like he spends all day fixing Internet problems or telling people to turn their laptops off and on first. It’s part of a broader package. Mike: “Of course I support colleagues in their daily work and I am the point of contact for IT problems, but I also manage suppliers and in the background I develop Brand New Day’s infrastructure together with another colleague. Last year, for example, I did a project together with an external company in which we implemented a tool for all employees. The intention was that they would not notice anything about it. And they succeeded! I am really proud of that.”
How is Brand New Day different?
“I love that I can organize my own day and decide whether I work at home or in the office. Of course you have that at other employers too, but the combination with the dynamic atmosphere and young and fresh mentality makes Brand New Day a really nice employer for me. A lot of young people work here and that brings with it a certain corporate culture that really appeals to me.
I had to get used to the fact that Brand New Day is a bank. That brings with it more rules and a different focus on security, something we always have to take into account. But then when I see that the business results are good and I realize that that is partly because people can do their jobs well. And that comes
Fun fact
Mike is one of the few Brand New Day’ers who doesn’t have his real name on his office mug. He was on vacation when the mugs were ordered, and his colleague thought it would be fun to put Mike’s gamertag on the mug instead. And that’s how Mike became “Meuk.”
